While I was working on the book Another Earth Catalog, which dealt with the effects of the Whole Earth Catalog, I was  asking myself for a figurative, proverbial equivalent. At some point I started from the subtitle "access to tools" and came up with the connection between tool and hand, which is the handle or stalk. This is how the Hand Tool Interfaces came about. 

As I continued to think about the late 1960s, Woodstock, hard rock until today, the cult of the (electric) guitar kept coming up. The instrument with which men run sweating across the stage to enjoy the howling of solos and feedback. 

The piece of wood on which the strings hang is clutched. The guitar necks stand here as objects. The Hand Music Interfaces thus stand for themselves. We can somehow imagine the instruments and those who play them.
